After the tragic death of his girlfriend, literature professor Samuel Salomon is no longer able to work. This event is already a year ago. Since then, however, he has also suffered from a horrific nightmare, which keeps returning. In the nightmare, he sees a young woman brutally murdered during a mysterious ritual. Dated junk, this. Balagueró can do much better.

And can that drab filter please be thrown in the trash for good? They even manage to ruin the beautiful Irish landscapes with it.

Certainly not bad.

It is always somewhat surprising how a director can fade away. Balagueró is actually quite a big name in the horror world, but I hadn't heard of this Muse until yesterday. It was only because there is a film from 2019 with the same name that I suddenly stumbled upon this one.

In terms of appeal, I can understand why this one doesn't do quite as well. It is quite a conceptual horror, also one with strong fantasy and mystery elements. Quite a lot needs to be explained and clarified, and although Balagueró moves through it reasonably quickly, I still felt that he lost himself in the story a bit at times.

I would have preferred to see a bit more film. Some better-developed scenes where the genre elements were fully utilized. As it is, the film tries to tell too much of what happens just to get to the end, but books are simply much better suited for that.

It is certainly not bad; Balagueró is simply too much of a seasoned veteran by now for that. It is entertaining, but unfortunately, it doesn't really grab you. Certainly not his best film, but on the other hand, it doesn't look out of place in his oeuvre either. Just solid filler.

3.0*

After Fragile, I immediately felt like watching another Balaguero. This one is a tad weaker in terms of narrative and plot. Cinematographically, however, it remains rock-solid and is quite atmospheric. The story is once again interesting, but it fails to convince anywhere. They could certainly have taken more time for certain aspects. The acting performances aren't that good either. The lead actor isn't the best actor in my eyes.

So, Muse is a film that had more potential. Although I certainly wasn't bored. It doesn't really push the boundaries, though. It could have turned out much gorier. 3 stars from me too.
