Just saw it in the cinema and I have to say that this third part manages to reach an excellent level again. As a fan of the former Planet of the Apes, this series also starts to impress. Frankly, this triptych is excellent, which you can't say about the whole old series. But that aside.
At a certain point you get the feeling that you only see monkeys in lengthy scenes where you never get the feeling that people are missing. Fascinating and impressive. The feelings that the monkeys convey are even more powerful and you could really empathize with them. Another asset of the film are the beautiful locations. Sometimes breathtaking. The action scenes also look great and as mentioned here it is not just any war film. There is clearly a lot of topicality and ethics in the film. The story is well put together and connects well with the previous parts. There are even certain references to the old series that you can easily spot. And now waiting for the astronauts to come back? 9/10

What a relief to have seen the film. The film is indeed kept "small", but the film does contain a few big moments. This works the emotions that Reeves wants to evoke.
It's mainly about the monkeys this time, although Harrelson does have an excellent role that pushes the film forward. The cgi is really stunning. In fact, the monkeys' cgi is so good that I don't even want to call it cgi anymore. The tears, the (wet, sticky) hair, the emotions. Everything works... Nowhere did I feel like I was watching animated protagonists.
The film does suffer from a somewhat slow middle part, but everything just seems to add up towards the end. The ending looked like the world of the Tim Burton version, which I think looks like the '68 original again?
It is now time to watch the original series, I expect the box soon.

Still a minor setback. This is partly due to expectations. With such a title and being the final part of a trilogy I expect something epic, but just like the second part, this basically remains a very small story in a big history. Even then I thought that was a disadvantage of the film. The film mainly takes place in the woods, and despite sometimes beautiful pictures, it still has a somewhat boring environment.
And after a strong first hour, the film goes completely wrong with Harelson playing some kind of wannabe Kurtz. It's way too over the top and doesn't fit into this movie at all. Also because we don't get to see enough of the rest of the world to get an idea why Harrelson is like that. But it is also mainly his game, that he shaves his skull smooth, for example in full view, that makes this so bad. Because he does explain his motives, but by then it is already too late. I'm not even going to mention all the further unbelievable things, others have already done that.
On the other hand, that first scene is slightly fantastic, shot with fresh ideas and it pops nicely. The CGI is also very strong and believable. That is also allowed, because after that first scene the focus suddenly changes and we follow the monkeys and not the humans. I think that's daring but it fits into the story. The 140 minutes really fly by without really getting bored (not even the second hour) and certainly the ending connects nicely with the original . 3.0*.
