During the arrest of the bank employee and new-fangled criminal Leon Poole (Corey), his wife is accidentally shot. Five years later, he flees from prison and wants revenge on the responsible police officer Sam Wagner (Cotten).

A small film noir with an all too classic and clichéd subject: revenge after a prison sentence. The dangers faced by a police officer's wife are also nothing new. Moreover, there are no surprising plot twists, so the whole thing feels very much like "déjà vu." There is some tension for a moment, but it doesn't last long.
Joseph Cotton is of course a veteran in the field, and the beautiful Rhonda Fleming was a talented actress.

A decent film about an escaped prisoner seeking revenge on the officer who got him there. A film noir with a simple and unoriginal story. However, partly due to the short running time, the film shows enough progress. Of the cast, Wendell Corey stands out the most as the psychopath.

Wendell Corey is memorable as Leon 'Foggy' Poole, a tormented bank employee who decides to rob his own bank. When the police expose him, it is up to Sam Wagner [Joseph Cotton] to arrest him. Poole refuses to surrender and injures Sam's partner, who, in the confusion, accidentally fatally wounds Poole's wife. Poole is sentenced to 30 years in prison and cannot accept that the man who killed his wife is going free. When he is transferred to a less secure facility after 5 years of good behavior, he sees his chance and escapes. The police warn Sam, who tries everything to prevent his wife Lila [Rhonda Fleming] from discovering what he already knows: that Leon is out for revenge!
This nail-biter rises above the average thanks to a fascinating villain. The friendly, somewhat goofy-looking Corey is cleverly cast as Poole, imbuing him with an outward innocence that suits the sensitive side of his character. Poole is no sadist, but a moralist who has clear boundaries and does not hesitate to take the life of anyone who crosses them. The ever-reliable Cotton delivers masterful work once again, and Rhonda Fleming also impresses as the woman who does not realize she is a pawn in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. A soberly made, yet highly effective thriller.
