Other sci-fi films (such as Forbidden Planet) at least attempt to present a credible vision of the future. With It! the (limited) budget is probably spent on the cockpit of the spaceship. The decoration of the characters is not very futuristic.

It's funny to see that the ladies still walk around like '50 housewives (incl. frumpy haircuts). They prepare breakfast for the space crew and one carries a coffee pot, ready to re-fill like an American waitress.

This observation has absolutely nothing to do with the film, but it says enough about the pretensions of the filmmakers and the zeitgeist: Even if the women are emancipated enough to man a space flight, the starting point of the futuristic woman remains that of the diligent housewife.

Some poor scores here for this film. Sure, it's cheap, bad special effects of flying rockets and the monster doesn't look good, but I really enjoy this kind of old-school sci-fi horror. I was already happy from the opening shot, and the film has a great menacing atmosphere when a rescue mission to Mars is stalked by a local alien. With beautiful lyrics like 'Mars is almost as large as Texas, there could be monsters!'. As soon as the monster comes into view, it all becomes less convincing, and the fakeness is very clear. Still, I thought this precursor to Alien was a very entertaining hour of film.

Of course, it looks particularly bad visually. The spaceship is literally a toy rocket or a rocket from the comics. And the monster from Mars, well, it was more like a gorilla in a suit. His movements felt a bit too human, the way he moved, the way he went up and down the stairs... Quite laughable actually. And yet I found it all charming.

Despite the lame acting too. Little to no panic from the rest of the crew, no screaming women here either. I was surprised what arsenal of weapons was on board a space mission. As if they were prepared.

I didn't find it a punishment to watch this, but then again I'm a fan of old horror movies. I really liked the shadows of the monster (it reminded me of Nosferatu). They were particularly threatening, until you saw the monster itself, haha.
