“Something very weird is happening to me. I keep killing people! There's a chance I may be… a robot!”

American Ultra is a film that mixes different genres with varying results. Action, romance, humor and drama, director Nima Nourizadeh makes an entertaining mess of it, but does get a bit lost as the chaos continues.

The romantic part is still the best and that is mainly due to Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. They have excellent chemistry and their relationship is presented in a fun and humorous way. Mike is a bit of a nerd and timid type and Phoebe is the caring and outgoing of the two. Both love weed, that's for sure. Once the story unfolds and Mike turns out to be part of a failed CIA experiment, the film becomes an action-packed adventure. The humor doesn't always work and Topher Grace is totally unbelievable as a bad guy, but Connie Britton, Walton Goggins and Tony Hale, among others, are in great shape. The fight scenes look slick and are well choreographed. American Ultra has its strong moments but takes too much on its fork. With a little more focus, this would have made for a much better film. Fortunately, Stewart and Eisenberg ensure that the film remains enjoyable and certainly worth watching.

funny.

Plot is pretty over the top. Some comic book nonsense and spy novel nonsense thrown together, luckily Nourizadeh is quite aware of that and he just takes it for granted. If you're expecting a serious movie, you'd better go and watch something else.

In that respect Eisenberg is very good. Gives his role something dryly comical, making it even easier to look away. Stewart isn't the most emotive either, the only one who really shines is Topher Grace. Fortunately, his role allows just that, so that it is not even that irritating.

Nourizadeh doesn't shy away much. Excessively great, more childishly stupid and regularly delirious. The only problem is that the directing is just a bit too easy. Nourizadeh tries to be a bit hip, but doesn't really succeed enough. If you do make a clumsy and loud film, make sure it is stylized accordingly. Not everything comes out right now.

But entertaining certainly does, also because it does not last too long. Simple, pure and violent lol this.

3.5*

Jesse Eisenberg is especially good at neurotic roles like this. Kristen Stewart is better in other films, but fits in this modest role. And humor remains a difficult genre. The film doesn't really have to be about acting. And neither does the story that isn't really fleshed out or makes sense. But it shouldn't be, it's all about humor. Wonderful dry humor that I can appreciate.

Fortunately, the writers of this film have spent more time in the jokes and dialogues than in the story. But at the same time there is enough momentum in the film with the necessary action and a matching atmosphere. So that it doesn't just become an hour and a half of jokes and jokes. Please see more of these types of movies!
