Laura Sommerfeld [Veronica Ferres] is the leader of a delegation of scientists tasked with investigating the poisoning and drying up of a lake in Bolivia on behalf of the UN. The delegation is kidnapped, but Dr. Fabio Cavani [Gael García Bernal] and Dr. Arnold Maier [Volker Zack] are soon released. Now it gets confusing: Matt Riley [Michael Shannon] is the CEO of the company responsible for the water poisoning. As penance, he forces Laura to see the consequences of his own actions. Exactly what she was there for anyway?! To be honest, I didn't understand much about it either, but it quickly became clear to me that Herzog is more interested in anthropological stories and preaching about the destruction of the world. Another reason why the actors play their roles with a certain indifference. Peter Zeitlinger's wonderful camera work is the only reason this doesn't get the lowest score possible.

One of the worst movies ever.

Oh and the director is Herzog, that too. Where exactly did that go wrong. Did I miss something then?

Or better yet, have all the other critics, movie housegoers, and casual viewers missed something? Is there something very profound, something incomprehensible about how Michael Shannon delivers his worst portrayal ever here, how Veronica Ferres is made fun of as the first film student? Is there a layer somewhere that makes that a masterpiece? Is the first hour of the film, with the masked men moving like first-year boy scouts, a symbol for something that escapes me the explanation?

Truly a film to watch without sound and without subtitles. Then it's really better, trust me.
