De Voortrekkers plot
The Voortrekkers were Dutch-speaking Afrikaner farmers who emigrated between 1830 and 1850 from the Cape Colony, which was annexed by the British, to the interior of South Africa in the so-called Great Trek, to found their own independent Boer states. The leader of the Voortrekkers, Piet Retief, falls into the hands of Zulu king Dingane in 1838 and is killed. This resulted in the Great Trek of the Boers, in which the Voortrekkers moved on to the later peasant republics of the Orange Free State, the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Republic of Natalia. It ends with the Battle of Blood River in 1838, in which a few hundred Afrikaners defeat thousands of Zulus.
