Moderate.

I thought the fake-documentary vibe was actually quite well-executed. The 70s is clearly evident in all its ugliness, while the recent interviews are far too harshly and sharply lit. Just as you'd expect from a documentary.

The buildup is a bit slow, and the film is incredibly bogged down in clichés. If it had been seen a hundred times, it might have been exciting, but the climax is too weak, and it's all a bit too clinical to create any real atmosphere.

All that remains is a decent exercise by director Sparling. I'd love to try again, as the direction is decent, but hopefully with a more exciting subject matter, or at least something more original.

It's not bad, but it is a bit boring.

This film is unfairly labeled a horror film; as mentioned above, it's more of a documentary, with some elements of a thriller. However, I didn't find this particularly objectionable, as I do enjoy documentaries. Furthermore, it's certainly not a particularly innovative or exciting film, but I still don't think it misses the mark. The acting is decent and the story is reasonably entertaining. Of course, The Atticus Institute doesn't rise above mediocrity, but it's still worth watching, partly due to its relatively short running time.

Director Chris Sparling has an intriguing concept, but can't escape a very poor cast. Rya Kihlstedt, in particular, is needlessly theatrical, making him a particularly ridiculous character. Moreover, the ridiculous premise and the unspectacular documentary elements are equally ineffective, making Sparling struggle to develop an effective narrative arc. Although certain influences are original and the film never drags on too long, its full potential is never realized.
