Normandy, early twentieth century. Célestine, a young chambermaid known for her beauty, has just arrived from Paris to work for the Lanlaire family. While trying to fend off Mr. Lanlaire's advances, she has to deal with Mrs. Lanlaire who rules the household with an iron fist. She also meets Joseph, a mysterious gardener who falls in love with her.

The film is based on the novel by Octave Mirbeau, a novel that has been filmed several times, with various versions.
I saw Buñuel's film from 1964 and when I saw Jacquot's print it was clear that the same level was not achieved.
There is much less tension throughout the film and it must be said that, despite the efforts of main actress Léa Seydoux, the performance of an unparalleled Jeann Moreau was never achieved. The editing work doesn't always seem smooth either.
Interesting in the film, of course, remains the sketch of the class distinction from that time with a few striking scenes mistress-maid.
