Film starts strong (although some cgi doesn't look like it) and also later when some action comes in, that's all pretty good. But in between there is also a lot of crap where there is no chemistry between actors, so any attempt at romance is completely dead. And just make half a movie about that. Also a pity that the threat in that piece is nowhere really felt and real atmosphere is missed. Moretz is a fine actress and a treat to watch. Just like the movie itself is best to sit out. That's why 2.5*.

The first half hour of this teen film in the line of Hunger Games - Divergent - Host - Maze Runner is really excellent; in no time our heroine shoots down an unarmed, innocent man, at least that sets the tone right away in a nice and grim position. When the waves came across the country, entire cities were wiped out and mom and dad quickly died, I sat down for a while.

But alas, alas; The 5th Wave soon falls into nonsense: a little brother has to be rescued (including teddy bear), a particularly dull-playing love interest is conjured up from the top hat and the tempo comes to a complete standstill. The scenes in which the youngsters have to fight (high Ender's Game level) are still a fairly tasty change, with the ever-reliable Schreiber in a fine role (although the twist is so garish that it's not fun anymore).

The ending makes room for a sequel. Hopefully a strong story from A to Z.
