Knock Knock plot

"One night can cost you everything."

Evan Webber, a happily married architect, seems to have everything a person dreams of: a loving and successful wife, two beautiful children and an expensive house. During a weekend at home alone, his peaceful existence is interrupted by the arrival of two apparently innocent and lost girls. After letting them in to wait for a taxi, the night turns into a nightmare.

In the 80s you had Fatal attraction, in the 90s Misery, in the 00s Hard candy, and now Knock knock – thus apparently every decade gets the hostage drama it deserves, with in the one case the sympathy a little more with the perpetrator, in the other case partly or even completely with the victim, and in the best case equally divided between both so as not to make it too black and white. Difficult to feel any sympathy for the perpetrators in Knock knock (even the furniture and toys in the nursery have to believe it), but the victim goes through the whole meat grinder anyway. An uncomfortable, far too long and simply unpleasant experience from a director who already has a knack for meeting an apparent need for such films. Well made, but I don't have the stomach for it.

Okay, these kind of movies make me cranky and I can explain why.

The film wants to make a clichéd point that at the bottom all men are filthy immoral, lust-driven creatures. This in itself is a wafer-thin and unoriginal motif.

But it gets even more laughable when there are two much bigger immoral aspects in this movie. Namely the pedophile and incestuous fantasy that almost seems to be intertwined in American morale. But also assault and rape of a man who is himself dismissed as the perpetrator. If you reverse the roles of the man and the woman in this film, that is unthinkable.

Am I taking the movie too seriously? Maybe. Deal with it. *2.0

This film is no more than a wet dream for every man the first half hour that the ladies ring the bell. You have to see through the insanely brackish acting at the beginning of the film, which secretly contributes to the campy quality of the film. Once the ladies ring the doorbell, the testosterone is greatly aroused and it is difficult not to enjoy it immensely (and then I put it mildly). Once the "horny" part is over, the film remains nice and playful and the Armas and Izzo deliver themselves completely.

Not very high-quality film technically, but with this bizarre average you would almost think that only prudish and conservative America is voting for MovieMeter.

3.0* remain standing
