The 60s, 70s, and 80s were chock full of those British comedies. George and Mildred was a fun series, and they made a film adaptation of it, just like Dad's Army, Are You Being Served, etc. However, it's not as good and less successful. 2.0.

It's a shame that people thought they could make a decent film with the same characters, even with comedies in their heyday. Judging by the reactions and our own experiences, that's not entirely true. The series are much better, and because of the shorter story, you don't have to force yourself to create a strong narrative, which is the downside of the films: they're too long to stay funny for an hour and a half. Exceptions may prove the rule, but aside from "Mr. Bean," I can hardly think of a single one that stood out fantastically. Even the Bean character in the film isn't particularly strong.

Also this Mildred, who has chosen a wimp for a husband, Mr. George Roper (just imagine being married to him ), does not live up to expectations.

It's an easy watch, but apart from the case of mistaken identity, I didn't discover any real story and everything was quite predictable.

Still, I give the film a solid passing grade, largely due to the familiarity and the occasional humorous situations. These are completely absent in some films.

A 7-!

Yootha Joyce didn't have long to live during the production of this film, and her poor health is clearly visible, especially from certain angles and in certain lighting. Her face is puffy, the bags under her eyes are impossible to conceal. It's quite tragic, that addiction and her far-too-early death.

TV successes that lead to feature films can go two ways: you can make it into an extra-long episode following the same pattern, as happened with Dad's Army, or you can make it into an original film with a completely unusual storyline. Like this one. George and Mildred in a crime comedy...?

What I always find difficult is that the setting changes for no apparent reason. George and Mildred suddenly live in a mirror image of their TV house, as if they've swapped places with the neighbors.

I don't think the story is all that bad; I actually laughed a few times. The gangsters are quite over the top, but that makes the imperturbable naiveté of our couple celebrating their anniversary all the more striking.

Brian Murphy may be a little less clumsy this time around, but his chemistry with his co-star helps ensure that Joyce's final trick is a success.

After this viewing I stick to my 3.5*
