Lúcio Flávio, o Passageiro da Agonia plot

Lucio Flavio is a bandit who commits one robbery after another in the 1970s in Rio de Janeiro with his gang. Although he is portrayed in the media as some kind of John Dillinger, it is a sad reality for Lucio that he can barely earn a living from crime. He is entangled in a web of corruption, bribery and betrayal. When Lucio's girlfriend gives birth, he decides to go the right way, but this is beyond the will of his business partners.

It was a huge success in Brazil at the time, the fourth most-watched film ever or something of that nature, but apparently never broke through worldwide. One of the first films to openly address corruption within the Brazilian police force (although Lucio Flavio is indeed a fictional character, contrary to what is claimed here and there), resulting in death threats against director Babenco. A very typical 70s crime film with the same use of color and abrupt editing as Pixote. Furthermore, it is clear that Babenco, once again, couldn't keep his fantasies to himself: the main character walks around shirtless 90% of the time and is forced at one point, by way of 'torture,' to give his accomplice a blowjob.

Kino released this second film by Babenco, whom I know from his two most famous films (Pixote and Kiss of the Spider-Woman), as a companion piece to The Secret Agent.

The film is primarily a critical film about the death squads of the 1960s, wrapped in a genre film. The police here are often much worse than the criminals. It is striking that this film was made (and Pixote, for example) when the dictatorship of the era in which it is set was still in full swing. That fact fascinates me, and I love the clash between genre films and social criticism.
