Buffalo '66 plot

"Billy Brown just got out of jail. Now he’s going to serve some real time. He’s going home."

After five years, Billy Brown is released from prison. He vows to do two things: visit his parents, who all along thought he was happily married and had a nice job, and kill the football player who killed the Bills in the Super Bowl five years earlier. and thus also broke Billy's bet. It was his fault that Billy couldn't pay the bookie back and went to jail. During a bathroom break en route, Billy kidnaps young Layla from a dance studio and forces her to pose as his wife.

Less revision.

Was expecting it a bit, have been having a bit more trouble lately with the type of character Gallo puts down here. Perhaps a little too provoked, also with a little too many built-in explanations for why he has become this way. Although I have to admit that Gallo is still convincing as an actor. Ricci too by the way, the two are doing a great job.

Visually it was also a bit difficult for me. Still clearly the tight framing and very deliberate camera work, but the grey/brown look of the film eventually started to disappoint me. The ending scene didn't change that. Nowadays also a little less special than in the past and in terms of aesthetics and execution I didn't think it was so successful anymore.

But there is still plenty to enjoy. Two fascinating characters, a nice soundtrack, nice camera work. And the happy ending remains a very clear plus, luckily I forgot that after the first viewing.

Certainly not a bad film, certainly worth the effort, but certainly not the masterpiece I once saw in it.

3.5*

Beautiful piece of craftsmanship, this film, a poignant tearjerker culminating in wonderful hyper romanticism. It somewhat resembles a spoken musical, the characters and dialogues often (not always) a bit bizarre and larger than life, let's say a little bit out of alignment with reality, but poetically completely spot on.

Great bunch of actors of course, first of all Gallo himself, what a look that guy has too, and Ricci as the saving angel on duty is adorable. Huston and Gazzara as the parents, loveless to the point of madness, even if fantastic.

This is otherwise just very good, and the whole has a dry, black comic undertone. The beautiful, Dennis Potter-esque interludes (a crooning - well, lip-synching - Gazzara and a tap-dancing Ricci) are two nice icing on the cake.

When the film really moves and approaches the apotheosis, I hope for a finale that makes this a masterpiece, but Gallo's choice (in terms of screenplay and direction, I mean) for some reason disappoints me.

Anyway, this is still an excellent film.

Disappointed after not seeing it for so many years, but what a joy it is to watch Ricci here. Buffalo '66 - Christina Ricci (music: Moonchild by King Crimson). Gallo is a creative person with many great ideas, but not everything works out well and the dramatic impact was nil in my experience.

By the way, I had completely forgotten that Huston and Gazzara played mom and dad here, as well as a number of other roles (Rourke, Vincent, Arquette, Corrigan).

3.0*.
