“I see you.”

Unknown gem. It is difficult to come up with something original and fresh in the romcom genre, but Beyond the Lights succeeds. This is mainly due to the two great lead actors. Parker and Mbatha-Raw have chemistry and are also two excellent actors.

Mbatha-Raw bursts from the screen and is someone we will hear a lot more of in the future. Parker is the quiet force and offers good counterplay. And it is nice to see Minnie Driver in a movie again. The music is infectious and the last song is still stuck in my head. Refreshing romcom with two strong leading actors.

Anyone looking for a serious drama in Beyond the lights will be disappointed, the behavior of all the characters is far too clichéd for that (especially that mother). Furthermore, the film serves up sad pop throughout its entire running time (with the only exception of the fine Drunk in love). Especially the originally written music, at least that's what I'm assuming, does not contain nearly enough quality to pass for a successful hit (see also Her smell, where they struggle with the same problem). Apparently radio pop is harder to copy than you might think, which is also reassuring. Beyond the lights does contain a few nice moments, especially when the two protagonists are together, and if you approach it as a light, romantic film, it can be quite good.

This is a film that I came across at two film bloggers (De Filmkijker and Cinefille) and that I would never have put on if I had not read those reviews (I probably would never have even heard of the film). But I am glad that I saw this film, because it is indeed a very beautiful film. You see how messed up parents can exert the wrong pressure on their children, but also how this is followed by the pressure of fame, which in this case even causes this “child” to attempt suicide. It is a beautiful film about finding yourself again without a predetermined profile of an icon. The film also contains music and I think the last song is really beautiful!
