Blissful video.

Something different again. A high school geek movie set in South Central. And then also with a 90s hip-hop fetish, including soundtrack. wow.

Story-wise, no more or less than the normal stupid youth film, but worked out with much more originality. Also some nice cinematic jokes.

Hop, just 4 stars.

"I have my Harvard interview tomorrow. We're not going to a drug dealer's birthday party"

Dope is a clever and original coming of age film about growing up in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Los Angeles. That sounds heavy, but director Rick Famuyiwa gives it his own twist and the film has a smooth and almost light-hearted atmosphere about it. The film exudes a lot of fun and confidence, and you can tell it's really a personal project for Famuyiwa. The film is buzzing and bursting with energy.

Malcolm lives in Inglewood, but he manages to escape it anyway. He has perfect school results and his dream is to go to Harvard. He's a fan of 90s hip-hop and dresses that way. When he goes to a drug dealer's birthday party with his two friends Jib and Diggy, things go awry. It would be a shame to go into too much plot detail, but the comedic situations pile up. Luckily, Famuyiwa doesn't fall into the trap of making it all slapstick. He keeps his feet on the ground at key moments in the film, and in addition to the countless funny situations, Dope also really has something to say about life in such a neighborhood. The metal detectors at school are used in this film for some comedic moments, but it is actually horrifying that they have to be there. And hacking and dealing drugs is wrong, but when it produces so many fun situations, I turn a blind eye. Malcolm's closing monologue fits right in with the story, and as a college essay it's a hit in my opinion.
