The quiet streets of Texarkana are plagued by a maniac who bears a striking resemblance to the Phantom Killer who wreaked havoc on the town decades earlier. Is history repeating itself or has someone just seen the original movie too many times? Funny how they weave the original film into this story, but otherwise this new "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" doesn't have much to offer.
The killer looks recognizable and never really manages to come across as frightening. He does manage to be brutal here and there, but unfortunately the decision was made to leave some things off-screen.
Too bad, because in my opinion this film could have contained a bit more blood and gore.
The acting is of average slasher level and here and there they try to add nods to the original film. I can mention the previously mentioned "messing with the police" as an example. Furthermore, I unfortunately quickly realized that there were several murderers in the game and therefore the ending did not come across as great. Although the identity of the perpetrators was surprising.
However, the ending does feel quite uninspired, as it almost seems like a copy of the ending of Scream.
Entertaining enough for slasher fans, but this film doesn't really add much.

Nice.
Gomez-Rejon directed one of my favorite films just a year later. The fact that his earlier film was a horror immediately made me curious about more films from his career. Although this film is difficult to compare with its teenage environment, it still remains an entertaining and quality film.
It's just not really brilliant, because the balance that Gomez-Rejon managed to use a year later is not reflected here. In fact, the drama side of the story is only moderately connected to the rest, especially the horror. The fact that it doesn't get annoying is mainly due to the argument that the kills are nice and bloody and nasty. Quite graphic, I didn't immediately expect it.
In terms of stylization, it is a neat film and it all comes across a bit better than the average horror film. Pretty solid camera work, some nice flares and a pretty modern look. I can't compare it to the 70's film, but I assume this must be a more modern adaptation. The story has some messiness and the finale is not particularly strong, but otherwise it moves forward quite nicely.
So good for entertainment. It tries to appear a little more intelligent than the average horror film and also takes place on a much larger scale, but that doesn't make much of an impression. Furthermore, it is well depicted and it looks nice. If you can close it off smoothly and quickly, the party is quite complete. Not strong, but certainly not bad.
