And suddenly you miss the time when Leprechaun killed someone by jumping on him with a pogo stick, used a lightsaber in space and got stoned in the hood. No matter how bad, those films were at least entertaining pulp. Unlike this remake/reboot or whatever the hell it is. The title 'Origins' suggests that it is a prequel, but it has nothing to do with the original franchise. The film is purely and simply an extremely interchangeable horror, which wants to ride on the name of an existing horror character.

Leprechaun: Origins is yet another "young person in the middle of nowhere in a cabin in the woods in trouble" story. Even people who have never seen a horror in their lives are completely fed up with this formula. Then our reboot Leprechaun arrives on the scene to hunt them down. Although Leprechaun.. it's more like a failed love baby between an orc and Pumpkinhead with dwarfism. No dog would make a Leprechaun out of this. It is therefore hilarious to read on the internet that "actor" Dylan Postl has not seen the previous films in the franchise so that it would not influence his role. His role, which only consists of running around with a mask on and occasionally growling. Must have been difficult.

But if you take away the whole Leprechaun part, are you still left with at least a decent or passable horror? No, not even that. The plot is extremely illogical and the characters are really stupid (they could easily kill him when he was eating Brendan Fletcher, but then they ran away armed and left their friend behind. Only to be killed less than a few seconds later shout that they are going to kill the monster). Lead actress Stephanie Bennett in particular was terribly irritating with her repertoire of whining and screaming. At least Warwick Davis had opposite Jennifer Aniston in his first film.

1.0*

The title is an unfortunate choice, because it immediately evokes associations with a dwarf in a green suit who is looking for his golden shilling. Could this be the story behind the origins of the Leprechaun myth? Well, not really. This is a dime-a-dozen slash-n-stalking film in which backpackers in Ireland (so much for the links with 'leprechauns') are tempted to trek to a remote place where they are confronted with a bloodthirsty, but barely visible monster that is supposed to represent a leprechaun. No Warwick Davis, no humor but a competently made horror film that is unfortunately just as original as its title. Been there, done that... and don't do it again!

A film that is ruined by clumsy marketing, as in principle it has little to do with the well-known series. It also has little to do with an origin story, as director Zach Lipovsky opts for a fairly safe ready-made slash effect. To start on a positive note, the acting is quite nice, especially Brendan Fletcher always knows how to do something with his characters and the first 20 minutes are great. However, the decision is made to keep the creature completely out of the lens for a long time and even during the final 'showdown' it is barely shown clearly. If you pause the film for a moment during such a siege, you will see why. Very poor design of an unintimidating threat, with incomprehensibly messy editing and extremely ugly environments. It perfectly illustrates what ultimately became of this series, until Steven Kostanski was finally able to add a little fun to it four years later.
