A year ago, my friend showed the bear's attack, which I thought was quite impressive. After seeing MacDonald's Pyewacket (2017) (3.5*) it was high time to finally give this one a chance as well. Somehow it is a pity that the film shows off the bear (eg on the cover of the UK DVD), the poster here on Moviemeter is a good exception. Sounds like a nice movie to go into without any prior knowledge. The threat of, among other things, that stranger would turn out a lot more exciting. I was actually already thinking elsewhere: where is the bear? Fortunately, MacDonald knows what he's doing. Despite being (again) a slow burner, it is captivating from start to finish. Mainly due to his solid style, with very finely controlled camera work (read here in the comments ''lousy camera work''... Man, man, man...), beautiful colors and a pleasant (but standard ) ambient soundtrack. Moreover, all played very naturally and the drama that MacDonald likes to build on, is never too thick. Wonderful mix of genres (certainly not full-blooded horror).

Good.

These kinds of videos are of a kind that never really stand out. Not that it is the most obscure film, but certainly not the best known either. Just a shame really, because this Backcountry is a very nice addition to the nature horror genre. A good director mixed with a nice story.

Backcountry takes a nice run-up so that the first half has little to do with horror. Many viewers will probably be able to drop out because of the slow run-up, but I was always fascinated by the events. Director MacDonald knows his tricks and applies the right approach. Quiet and with an eye for nature.

The camera work is good and almost taking away from the soundtrack is also a strong choice. As a result, it quickly feels to the viewer as if it is really in nature. Not that every shot is as interesting as the next, but there are quite a few nice shots in this film, and they only work for the benefit.

The acting doesn't always stand out and some situations are without a doubt irritating, but as soon as you can look around this a bit, you can expect a pretty nice filler. The story isn't strong, but some scenes are seriously terrifying in this movie. Thanks to strong editing and playing with the sound, some scenes come in well.

It is a pity that after the well-known moment little more happens to make it repeatedly interesting as a result. The run-up is actually much longer than the adventure itself and that makes the film somewhat out of balance. Furthermore, a good snack with some strong images and careful direction. I thought there was nothing wrong with it. Nice discovery.

Backcountry

A film that has little to do with apart from some bickering and a bear. A couple gets lost in a vast wilderness because Alex wants to propose to her by a lake (his favorite spot). Unfortunately, they never get to that point, as Alex lost track of his way and refused to take the map of the area with him if necessary. That was the 1st bad choice and the film has several. After Alex was killed by that bear, the camera work is all messed up. It seems like they were trying to visualize her vision with that, but I found it quite irritating. Before that, the shots were still pretty good. The actors were also not convincing enough unfortunately.

There are better movies in this genre. 2.5 stars.
