The Girls on the Bus plot

Four female journalists, all with their own backgrounds, are followed as they report on the American presidential elections. When Sadie McCarthy boards the campaign bus, she meets three colleagues: Lola, Kimberlyn and Grace. Although the journalists differ greatly from each other, a friendship gradually blossoms between the four.

De tiendelige HBO Max-serie The Girls on the Bus is losjes gebaseerd op het boek Chasing Hillary van Amy Chozick. Dit boek gaat over de campagne die Hillary Clinton in 2016 voerde om de eerste vrouwelijke president van de VS te worden. In deze serie zitten journalisten in de bus die de democratische presidentskandidaten volgen op weg naar campagnebijeenkomsten. De vier vrouwelijke hoofdrolspelers leveren degelijk acteerwerk af en krijgen steeds meer chemie met elkaar. Maar The Girls on the Bus bewandelt vooral platgetreden paden. Journalistieke onafhankelijkheid, politieke thema's en persoonlijke relaties; het blijft allemaal oppervlakkig en vrijblijvend. En typisch Amerikaans. Dus over de top en onverklaarbaar uitzinnig bij tijd en wijle. Maar dat is kennelijk comedy. Het nieuws wordt in The Girls on the Bus alleen in chocoladeletters gebracht.

The ten-part HBO Max series The Girls on the Bus is loosely based on the book Chasing Hillary by Amy Chozick. This book is about Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign to become the first female president of the US. In this series, journalists are on the bus following the Democratic presidential candidates on their way to campaign rallies.

The four female leads deliver solid acting and develop more and more chemistry with each other. But The Girls on the Bus mainly follows well-trodden paths. Journalistic independence, political themes and personal relationships; it all remains superficial and non-binding. And typically American. So over the top and inexplicably frantic at times. But apparently that's comedy. In The Girls on the Bus, the news is only delivered in chocolate letters.
