Vlucht HS13 plot

In Flight HS13, the life of the successful businesswoman Liv is suddenly turned upside down by a plane crash in which her husband Simon is said to be involved. However, Simon, a busy doctor on his way to a medical conference in Barcelona, turns out not to be on board the plane. Simon is still alive, but no one knows where he is. Soon, Liv, her son and the rest of the family are confronted by strange developments that uncover a dark past. Is Simon really the man everyone thinks he is?

Op zich een interessant uitgangspunt om een familiegeschiedenis te koppelen aan (de angst voor) internationaal terrorisme. De thrillerschrijfsters Marion Pauw en Elle van Rijn hebben met het Turkse bronmateriaal - Bron (2012) - inderdaad iets in handen gehad om een thrillerserie te schrijven die inhaakt op de actualiteit. Het grootste probleem van de serie wordt al duidelijk in de eerste twee afleveringen: te veel personages, te veel familiegeheimen. Daarbij laat het mysterie zelf weinig aan de verbeelding over, want de belangrijkste wendingen worden vroeg in de serie uit de doeken gedaan. Het gevolg is een chaotisch zooitje waar geforceerd op zoek wordt gegaan naar details en zijlijntjes om het centrale plot voort te stuwen. Een ander probleem is dat het voelt als een goedkopere variant van de grote Amerikaanse genreproducties als Homeland. Door de laffe pogingen om series met meer budget na te bootsen, krijg je series met onvoldoende eigen gezicht om zich te onderscheiden van de rest. Erg jammer, want het acteerwerk en de sfeerschepping zijn bij vlagen best oké: hier had iets beters uitgehaald kunnen worden.

In itself an interesting starting point for linking a family history to (the fear of) international terrorism. The thriller writers Marion Pauw and Elle van Rijn have indeed had something in their hands with the Turkish source material - Bron (2012) - to write a thriller series that taps into current events. The series' biggest problem becomes apparent in the first two episodes: too many characters, too many family secrets. The mystery itself leaves little to the imagination, as the main twists and turns are revealed early in the series. The result is a chaotic mess where details and sidelines are forced to propel the central plot. Another problem is that it feels like a cheaper version of the big American genre productions like Homeland. By the cowardly attempts to imitate series with more budget, you get series with insufficient identity to distinguish themselves from the rest. A pity, because the acting and the atmosphere are at times quite okay: something better could have been done here.

Beter laat dan nooit. Ik beoordeel de serie beter dan het gemiddelde hier. Natuurlijk zitten er heel veel standaard trucjes in om de spanning op te voeren...nou en? De spanning wordt ook echt heel erg opgevoerd daardoor. Ik denk ook dat onze Katja echt is uitgegroeid tot een actrice van (wereld) formaat. Het gaat niet alleen meer om de mooie ogen en de opblaastieten. Ze zet echt heel overtuigend en consistent haar personage weer. Het enige minpunt, en dat is er één voor het script en/of de regie: af en toe wordt het zo traag dat ik het echt moeilijk vond om niet tussendoor andere dingen te gaan doen, waardoor je de concentratie geheel kwijtraakt en je delen voor jezelf moet herhalen. Dat kwam in iedere aflevering zeker één keer voor. Maar het totaal: echt een bingewatcher! En wat een droombaas heeft die Erik! En wederom een voorbeeld hoe walgelijk de cultuur is die we zo massaal aan het importeren zijn.

Better late than never. I rate the series better than the average here. Of course there are many standard tricks to increase the tension ... so what? It also really ramps up the tension. I also think that our Katja has really grown into an actress of (world) stature. It's not just about the pretty eyes and the blow-up tits anymore. She really portrays her character very convincingly and consistently. The only downside, and that's one for the script and/or the direction: at times it gets so slow that I found it really hard not to do other things in between, so you lose concentration completely and your parts for have to repeat yourself. That happened at least once in every episode. But the total: really a binge watcher! And what a dream boss that Erik has! And yet another example of how disgusting the culture we are importing so massively is.
