The Beast in Me plot

Since the tragic death of her son, acclaimed author Aggie Wiggs has retreated from public life, unable to write, a shadow of her former self. But she finds an unlikely subject for a new book when the house next door is purchased by Nile Sheldon, a famous and formidable real estate magnate who was once the prime suspect in his wife's disappearance. Aggie, simultaneously shocked and fascinated by this man, finds herself compulsively searching for the truth in a cat-and-mouse game that could very well end fatally.

Wat een heerlijke serie is dit, eindelijk nog eens een echte topserie op Netflix. Zoals door sommige terecht word gezegd is vooral het spel tussen Danes en Rhys fantastisch, ze zorgen met hun tweetjes voor dat de serie nog naar een hoger niveau word getild. Wist mijn volledige aandacht vast te houden tot het einde, echt een serie om lekker languit in de sofa te bingewatchen. Die rol van Rhys, zou ook wel iets voor Anthony Hopkins geweest zijn, toen hij nog jonger was. Maar Rhys doet het zoals gezegd ook fantastisch...

What a wonderful series this is, finally a truly top-notch series on Netflix. As some rightly point out, the interaction between Danes and Rhys is especially fantastic; the two of them elevate the series even further. It held my full attention until the very end; it's truly a series perfect for relaxing on the sofa and binge-watching.

That role of Rhys would have been something for Anthony Hopkins when he was younger. But, as mentioned, Rhys is fantastic...

Ondanks dat ik wel een beetje jeuk kreeg van het jankerige gezicht en gestressde gedoe van Claire Danes vond ik het een aangename serie. Matthew Rhys blonk uit als slechterik. Wat een kille blik heeft die acteur. Gewoon eng. Het is een spannende serie. Schrijfster Aggie met relatieproblemen en een schrijversblok. De griezelige buurman Nile die in het zakenleven en privé niet de braafste is. Natuurlijk wat onbegrepen karakters, zoals de FBI agent. Nile komt er wel telkens te gemakkelijk van af. De FBI toch we wat beter kunnen snuffelen in de zaken van Nile. Netflix heeft hier eens een goede serie neergezet. Dat mag ook wel na de zoveelste verhoging van de abonnementen.

Although I was a bit itchy from Claire Danes's whiny face and stressed-out behavior, I found it an enjoyable series. Matthew Rhys excelled as the villain. What a cold stare that actor has. Simply terrifying.

It's a gripping series. Author Aggie struggles with relationship problems and writer's block. The creepy neighbor Nile isn't exactly the best at business or personal life. Of course, there are some misunderstood characters, like the FBI agent.

Nile always gets off too easily. The FBI should be able to dig deeper into Nile's business.

Netflix finally put out a good series here. And that's about it after yet another subscription increase.

Claire Danes (Homeland, Fleischman Is in Trouble) vertolkt in The Beast in Me een neurotische schrijver die verdwaald is in haar eigen rouw en angst. Danes gooit al haar bekende tics en trucs in de strijd, maar juist daardoor ontbreekt soms de echte ziel in haar personage. Tegenspeler Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason) zet een overtuigende compulsieve onruststoker neer en vormt een solide tegenwicht voor Danes. Als executive producer krijgt Danes bovendien steun van niemand minder dan Jodie Foster. Met zulke grote namen liggen de verwachtingen vanzelfsprekend hoog. Misschien té hoog, want hoewel The Beast in Me degelijk gemaakt is, blijft de serie 'volgens het boekje' en voorspelbaar. Het geheel voelt minder verrassend dan je zou hopen met zoveel talent voor en achter de camera. Dat neemt niet weg dat The Beast in Me een vlotte en prettig wegkijkende thriller is, die een breed publiek zonder twijfel zal weten te boeien. Kortom: kijk het beest gerust recht in de ogen.

In The Beast in Me, Claire Danes (Homeland, Fleischman Is in Trouble) plays a neurotic writer lost in her own grief and anxiety. Danes employs all her familiar tics and tricks, but because of this, the true soul of her character is sometimes lacking. Co-star Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason) convincingly portrays a compulsive troublemaker and provides a solid foil for Danes.

As executive producer, Danes is also supported by none other than Jodie Foster. With such big names, expectations are naturally high. Perhaps too high, because while The Beast in Me is solidly made, the series remains textbook and predictable. The whole thing feels less surprising than you'd hope with so much talent both in front of and behind the camera.

That doesn't change the fact that The Beast in Me is a smooth and enjoyable thriller that will undoubtedly captivate a wide audience. In short: feel free to look the beast in the eye.
