Space: Above and Beyond plot

In the middle of the 21st century, humanity has begun to colonize other worlds. At some point, during their explorations, they come across an alien life form. These so-called Chigs completely wipe out two colonies from Earth, after which the Earth space fleet sent there is completely defeated. Pilots in training and newly graduated cadets are then sent into space. The Wildcards, a group of young astronauts, are followed from the moment they enter service. They are sent out for infantry duties on alien planets and as attack pilots in their SA-43 'Hammerhead' space fighters.

Space: Above and Beyond season 1

Besides X-Files, Millennium and Star Trek The Next Generation, this was my favorite series in the 90s and like the others I think this one is worth checking out again soon. What I have now found is unfortunately not in the top image quality it deserves. Unfortunately, this happens all too often with older TV series that are lovelessly smashed onto DVD. Perhaps a more worthy transfer can be seen somewhere.

Best episode was Who Monitors the Birds, a cinematic tour de force in which mainly images and music tell the story, with excellent few words. But the Eyes episode is also great, with the conspiracies by an untrustworthy regime on Earth, with the unforgettable closing line "I'd rather have the truth than a medal".

The casting of this series is simply amazing. With Rodney Rowland as the absolute standout in the role of the in-vitro Hawkes, a socially awkward super soldier. Kristen Cloke was tough and sexy but fortunately also human enough. De La Fuente is nice and light-hearted and provides some humor, but in Man in the High Castle, as a ruthless Japanese police commissioner, he has also shown that he has a lot of reach as an actor. Morgan Weissner's slightly too soft character was not appreciated by everyone, but also his acting is beyond dispute for me.
