Lily Chan is a young software engineer who works for Amaya, a high-tech company based in Silicon Valley. After her boyfriend's apparent suicide, Lily suspects a dirty game is being played and begins to investigate. She soon realizes that all roads lead to Forest, the enigmatic CEO of Amaya and Devs, the company's secretive development division. In Lily's search for the truth, she uncovers a technology-based conspiracy that could change the world.

Ik vond het een erg sterke serie juist: stijlvol, en in filosofisch opzicht waanzinnig ambitieus. Het centrale thema is de "vrije wil", en of dat bedreigd wordt door "determinisme" (het idee dat de toekomst vaststaat, dat we niet anders kunnen handelen dan we in feite handelen), maar daarnaast komen ook onder meer de metafysische implicaties van de kwantummechanica en het idee dat we in een simulatie leven (en of dat erg zou zijn) aan bod. Razend interessant allemaal. De personages en het plot zijn helaas minder boeiend, maar als je houdt van goed doordachte science-fiction die je aan het denken zet is dit absoluut een aanrader. Ps: ik heb elders in het Engels een opiniestuk geschreven over de behandeling van vrije wil in de serie. Het is behoorlijk lang (en Engelstalig dus), maar ik zal het braaf delen voor de geïnteresseerden.

I thought it was a really strong series: stylish, and philosophically insanely ambitious. The central theme is "free will", and whether it is threatened by "determinism" (the idea that the future is fixed, that we cannot act otherwise than we actually act), but also the metaphysical implications of quantum mechanics and the idea that we live in a simulation (and whether that would be bad). All very interesting. The characters and plot are unfortunately less interesting, but if you like well-thought-out science-fiction that makes you think, this is definitely a must.

Ps: I wrote an opinion piece in English elsewhere about the treatment of free will in the series. It is quite long (and therefore in English), but I will share it well for those who are interested.

Intelligente, ambitieuze serie die thriller- en science fiction-elementen combineert tot een spannend en vooral intrigerend geheel. Regisseur Alex Garland kan helemaal los gaan nu hij meer tijd tot zijn beschikking heeft. De reeks is zeker niet perfect, zo is hoofdrolspeelster Sonoya Mizuno iets te lichtgewicht om de serie overtuigend te kunnen dragen en niet alle verhaalelementen (en sommige special effects) werken even goed, maar de verhaallijnen en personages zijn fraai uitgewerkt en alles wordt bevredigend afgerond. De beste aflevering is die waarin twee personages gedurende een half uur tegenover elkaar zitten aan tafel en... praten. Fascinerend.

Intelligent, ambitious series that combines thriller and science fiction elements into an exciting and, above all, intriguing whole. Director Alex Garland can go wild now that he has more time at his disposal. The series is certainly not perfect, lead actress Sonoya Mizuno is a bit too lightweight to carry the series convincingly and not all story elements (and some special effects) work equally well, but the storylines and characters are nicely worked out and everything is completed satisfactorily. The best episode is the one in which two characters sit opposite each other at the table for half an hour and… talk. Fascinating.

Interessant. Ik hou van dit soort vreemdsoortigheid. De beeldvorming en soms afwijkende score is top. De mysterieuze aanpak had nog meer gekund zelfs. En dan het thema, genoeg ethisch gefilosofeer kun je hierop loslaten. Het is wel iets waar je in mee moet kunnen gaan, anders ga je niet door deze serie heenkomen. Het technische deel met alle kwantumdinges nemen we voor lief om dit als mogelijke realiteit aan te nemen; het wordt in ieder geval overtuigend, en niet enorm scifi, gebracht. Het is allemaal rete-interessant als je ervoor open staat. Zwaktes in de series zijn de bij tijd en wijle behoorlijke traagheid en enkele minder overtuigend spelende karakters, waaronder de hoofdrolspeler. Het voelt soms te geforceerd en niet zo natuurlijk. Ook wordt het drama/prive-leven soms iets teveel naar voren gebracht (ik begrijp dat dit fundament nodig is) en komen er wat clichés om de hoek wat dit betreft, waar de wetenschappelijke/mysterieuze kant veel interessanter is. Al met al boeiend voor wie ervoor open staat en houdt van mooie cinematografie. Sowieso weer eens wat anders en dat is altijd goed vind ik.

Interesting. I like this kind of weirdness. The imaging and sometimes deviating score is great. The mysterious approach could have been even more. And then the theme, enough ethical philosophizing you can let loose on this.

It is something you have to be able to go along with, otherwise you will not get through this series. We take the technical part with all the quantum stuff for granted to accept this as a possible reality; in any case it is convincingly, and not terribly sci-fi, presented. It is all very interesting if you are open to it.

Weaknesses in the series are the sometimes considerable slowness and some less convincing characters, including the main character. It sometimes feels too forced and not so natural. Also, the drama/private life is sometimes brought forward a bit too much (I understand that this foundation is necessary) and there are some clichés around the corner in this regard, where the scientific/mysterious side is much more interesting.

All in all, interesting for those who are open to it and love beautiful cinematography. Something different anyway and that's always good I think.
