Hundreds of years in the future, in the last living colony on Earth, in a town called New Babyl, twenty-four teenage candidates are chosen to participate in an annual musical competition called The Exemplar. It's a chance for everyone to write their name in the history books, but for Aliyah, the independent and adventurous daughter of a city governor, it's the start of an incredible adventure. The discovery of a mysterious archive exposes her to hip-hop, an ancient form of music culture, which makes her question everything she's ever known and will change her world forever.
