The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair plot

New York, spring 2008. Young author Marcus Goldman suffers from writer's block, while his publisher's deadline is approaching. Then in the garden of his mentor, star author Harry Quebert, the body of Nola Kellergan is found, who disappeared without a trace more than thirty years earlier at the age of fifteen. On Nola's body lies the manuscript of the novel that gave Quebert his breakthrough to the general public. Harry Quebert is immediately the prime suspect and his famous novel is discredited. Convinced of the innocence of his great role model, Marcus sets out for Harry's home in New Hampshire to investigate the real facts of Nola's death. But the truth turns out to be much more complicated than he thought.

Aardig moordmysterie dat minutieus ontrafelt wat er gebeurd is met de 15-jarige Nola, de muze van schrijver Harry Quebert (Patrick Dempsey). Het in Canada verfilmde verhaal is traag, maar blijft net boeien. Mede door de prachtige enscenering en landschappen. Echt spannend wordt het nooit, maar de zoektocht naar wat er gebeurd is levert een paar mooie plotwendingen op. Regisseur is de gelauwerde Jean-Jacques Annaud (Seven Years in Tibet, The Name of the Rose), die hiermee z'n eerste tv-serie maakt. Toch valt er wel het nodige aan te merken. Het is een typisch Amerikaanse serie: smooth, oppervlakkig, uitleggerig en komt nergens echt binnen. Het literaire sausje is zonder smaak, en lijkt meer op kinderliteratuur. Ook het acteerwerk is hier en daar ondermaats; Dempsey acteert vlak en lijkt op rustgevende medicatie te zijn gezet. Omdat de serie wisselt tussen de jaren '60, '70 en eind jaren '80, had de make-up afdeling veel werk. Het ziet er allemaal verzorgd uit. Kortom, een mixed bag die je uiteindelijk snel vergeet.

Nice murder mystery that meticulously unravels what happened to 15-year-old Nola, the muse of writer Harry Quebert (Patrick Dempsey). The story filmed in Canada is slow, but it just keeps you interested. Partly because of the beautiful staging and landscapes. It never gets really exciting, but the search for what happened yields a few nice plot twists. It is directed by the acclaimed Jean-Jacques Annaud (Seven Years in Tibet, The Name of the Rose), who is making his first TV series with this.

However, there is a lot to note. It's a typical American series: smooth, superficial, explanatory and doesn't really get anywhere. The literary sauce is tasteless, and is more like children's literature. The acting is also below average here and there; Dempsey acts flat and appears to be put on soothing medication. As the series alternates between the 60s, 70s and late 80s, the makeup department had a lot of work to do. It all looks neat. In short, a mixed bag that you quickly forget.
