The Serpent plot

Charles Sobhraj is a man believed to have been responsible for the deaths of some 20 young Western tourists in the mid-1970s. Together with his girlfriend and accomplice Marie-Andree Leclerc, they committed murders, and other crimes, in Thailand, Nepal and India. Yet Sobhraj always manages to stay out of the hands of the authorities. A young Dutch diplomat Herman Knippenberg, who works at the Dutch embassy in Bangkok, unexpectedly finds himself caught up in his web of lies and crime. Knippenberg sets in motion a series of events that make Sobhraj one of the most wanted criminals by Interpol...

Oeh, ik vond deze met vlagen toch wel ontzettend spannend. Wat een enge glibber, maar erg fascinerend. De stukjes met Dominique en Nadine vond ik het meest boeiend. Wel beetje belachelijk dat Herman niet door een Nederlander werd vertolkt. Haast niet te volgen wat deze fella zegt wanneer hij Nederlands sprak. Moest er wel om grinniken, en verder deed ie het goed, maar hij had op zijn minst wat meer moeten oefenen op de paar NL zinnetjes en woorden. Jenna Coleman gaat nog een grote worden denk ik, ze was ook al sterk in the Cry. 4-

I found the parts with Dominique and Nadine the most fascinating. A bit ridiculous that Herman was not interpreted by a Dutchman. Hard to follow what this fella says when he spoke Dutch. Had to chuckle at it, and otherwise he did well, but at least he should have practiced a little more on the few NL phrases and words. Jenna Coleman is going to be a big one I think, she was already strong in the Cry.

Mooi vormgegeven serie met een ijzersterk en spannend, waargebeurd verhaal. De jaren 70 zijn erg goed neergezet, maar wat een ontzettend beroerde acteerprestaties van een aantal acteurs (waaronder de hoofdrolspeler Billy Howle). Jammer. Dat heeft zeker kijkers gekost.

Beautifully designed series with a strong and exciting, true story. The 1970s are very well portrayed, but what an incredibly poor acting performance by a number of actors (including the lead actor Billy Howle). Unfortunately. That certainly cost viewers.

Een misdaadserie die zich qua plot en spanning zonder meer kan meten met Scandinavische misdaadseries. De jaren '70 zijn uitstekend in beeld gebracht en niet alleen vanwege de echte opnames uit die tijd. Twee minpuntjes: het geflipper in de tijd en de spanning en snelheid die ergens in het zevende deel behoorlijk af begon te nemen waardoor het échte boeiende aan de serie iets verwaterde. De cast was prima, vooral de rol van Sobhraj. Knippenberg vond ik iets minder. Als document over wat er zich destijds heeft afgespeeld is dit in ieder geval een absolute aanrader.

A crime series that can compete with Scandinavian crime series in terms of plot and tension. The 1970s are excellently portrayed and not only because of the real recordings from that time. Two minuses: the flipping in time and the tension and speed that started to decrease considerably somewhere in the seventh part, which diluted the really fascinating part of the series. The cast was fine, especially the role of Sobhraj. Knippenberg was a bit less for me. As a document about what happened at the time, this is in any case an absolute must.
