Dark, grim five-part series about a doomed whale expedition to the North Pole, set in 1850. The gloomy, ruthless atmosphere is particularly well captured and everything looks fantastically detailed, with impressive shots of the Arctic. The acting is superb, with Jack O'Connell superb in the complex lead and Colin Farrell terrifying as the murderous harpooner Henry Drax. At times the violence is extremely extreme and mainly portrayed, both against animals and humans, but it all fits perfectly within the raw context of the series. The last two episodes are a bit less than the first three, but by then director Andrew Haigh has more than proven his skills. Impressive.
