The New Look plot

Against the backdrop of the Nazi occupation of Paris during World War II, the French capital revives the fashion world through fashion icon Christian Dior. Dior's rise threatens Chanel's monopoly as the world's most famous fashion designer. Dior's other contemporary and rivals, such as Pierre Balmain, Cristóbal Balenciaga and associates, are also discussed.

Erg goed. Wel erg klassiek oorlogsverhaal de eerste afleveringen. Maar gaat het nou over Christian Dior of Coco Chanel? Maakt niet uit. Erg goed. Zeer interessant. Hoop dat er nog wel een paar seizoenen bij komen. De serie doet mij denken aan een tv oorlog serie uit 1980.

Very good. The first episodes are very classic war stories. But is it about Christian Dior or Coco Chanel? Does not matter. Very good. Very interesting. Hopefully there will be a few more seasons. The series reminds me of a TV war series from 1980.

De titel is goed gekozen; niet alleen is deze van toepassing op de beroemde collectie van modeontwerper Christian Dior, maar ook op de wijze waarop het verhaal wordt verteld. Vooral de lotgevallen van Coco Chanel tijdens en na WOII zijn behoorlijk confronterend en ronduit bizar. Overwegend een boeiende serie met een prima cast; Ben Medelsohn heeft een mooie ingetogen hoofdrol en er is een prachtige bijrol weggelegd voor John Malkovich. Overigens grappig hoe deze tegen het einde wordt herenigd met zijn Dangerous Liaisons-tegenspeelster Glenn Close. Het is aanvankelijk even inkomen en de eerste twee afleveringen beschikken over irritant schokkerig camerawerk, maar eenmaal op stoom is dit een meeslepende, vaak grappige en soms aangrijpende kijkervaring.

The title is well chosen; not only does this apply to the famous collection of fashion designer Christian Dior, but also to the way in which the story is told. The adventures of Coco Chanel during and after WWII in particular are quite confrontational and downright bizarre. Overall a fascinating series with an excellent cast; Ben Medelsohn has a beautiful subdued leading role and there is a wonderful supporting role for John Malkovich. It's funny how he is reunited with his Dangerous Liaisons co-star Glenn Close towards the end. It takes some time at first and the first two episodes feature annoyingly shaky camera work, but once it gets going, this is a compelling, often funny and sometimes poignant viewing experience.
