The Haunting of Bly Manor plot

1980s England. After the tragic death of an au pair, Henry Wingrave hires a young American nanny, Dani Clayton, to care for his orphaned niece and nephew at the Bly Manor estate. They live there with Chef Owen, gardener Jamie and the housekeeper, Mrs Grose. Arriving at the estate, Dani begins to see apparitions that continue to haunt the property. At Bly Manor estate, death doesn't mean you're gone.

Wederom een mooie “The haunting of....” serie. Al heeft deze wel wat meer tijd nodig om in de juiste sfeer te komen dan The haunting of Hill house. Maar mijn geduld is rijkelijk beloond! Er blijkt weer een hartverscheurend familiedrama aan ten grondslag te liggen. met enkele interessante twists. Zeer aanbevelenswaardig.

Another beautiful “The haunting of...” series. Although this one needs a little more time to get into the right atmosphere than The haunting of Hill house. But my patience has been richly rewarded! It turns out that another heartbreaking family drama is behind it. with some interesting twists. Highly recommendable.

Het duurt even voor de plot op gang komt en de personages beginnen te intrigeren, maar eenmaal op stoom valt er wel het één en ander te genieten. Niet zo goed (of eng) als het eerdere The Haunting Of Hill House, wellicht omdat regisseur Mike Flanagan hier alleen de eerste aflevering regisseert, maar naar het einde toe maakt de serie toch wel de nodige indruk. De laatste twee afleveringen zijn erg mooi.

It takes a while for the plot to get going and the characters start to intrigue, but once up and running there is a lot to enjoy. Not as good (or scary) as the earlier The Haunting Of Hill House, perhaps because director Mike Flanagan only directs the first episode here, but towards the end the series does make quite the impression. The last two episodes are very nice.

Aardige reeks, in vergelijking met The Haunting of Hill House (en door voor deze titel te kiezen maak je die vergelijking in feite onafwendbaar) wordt er iets meer voor drama gekozen ten opzichte van horror/mystery. Bepaalde aspecten vond ik erg goed; zo werden de personages van Dani, Owen en Mrs. Grose geweldig goed neergezet, en spreekt het hele idee van memory hopping me wel aan, aflevering vijf met name vormde het hoogtepunt van de reeks. Daartegenover staat de soms wat te felle nadruk op (melo)drama, en een aantal minder boeiende verhaallijnen (zoals de hele affaire met Peter en Rebecca). Ook aflevering 8 vond ik geen voltreffer, niet zozeer omwille van de inhoud, eerder omwille van het concept - aan dit verhaal een volledige aflevering wijden, was me iets teveel van het goede. Maar ik begrijp het opzet zeker wel. De finale viel me ook wat tegen, een beetje tam, en de uiteindelijke ontknoping helemaal aan het eind miste een emotionele weerslag. Ik heb de serie, bestaande uit 9 afleveringen, wel vorig weekend helemaal uitgekeken, dus het is een reeks die je, eenmaal je erin zit, wel weet mee te voeren, wat een pluspunt is. Een voldoende heb ik hier dus zeer zeker wel voor over! 3 sterren

Nice series, compared to The Haunting of Hill House (and by choosing this title you actually make that comparison unavoidable) there is a little more drama than horror/mystery.

Certain aspects I really liked; thus the characters of Dani, Owen and Mrs. Grose very well portrayed, and the whole idea of memory hopping appeals to me, episode five in particular was the highlight of the series. On the other hand, there is the sometimes too strong emphasis on (melo)drama, and a number of less fascinating storylines (such as the whole affair with Peter and Rebecca). Episode 8 wasn't a hit either, not so much because of the content, rather because of the concept - dedicating an entire episode to this story was a bit too much for me. But I certainly understand the intent. The final was also a bit disappointing, a bit tame, and the final denouement at the very end lacked any emotional repercussions.

I did watch the whole series, consisting of 9 episodes, last weekend, so it's a series that once you're in it, you know how to carry it along, which is a plus. So I definitely have enough for this!
