Stonehouse plot

In November 1974, on the beach of a large luxury hotel in Florida, Labor minister and senior member of Harold Wilson's government, John Stonehouse, inexplicably disappears. There is only neatly stacked clothing on the beach. It appears that he swam into the sea with the intention of taking his own life. Then he suddenly reappears in Melbourne where he lives a new life under the name of a deceased person.

Stonehouse season 1

The British have a rich tradition of blundering politicians. Sometimes true, sometimes a little bit true. It is grateful fodder for a number of series, such as Anatomy of a Scandal, A Very English Scandal and The Trial of Christine Keeler. Now there is Stonehouse, about the British risen and self-righteous politician John Stonehouse who becomes a minister with smooth talk.

Author John Preston (A Very English Scandal) turned it into a three-part miniseries. Matthew Macfadyen (Succession, Quiz) plays Stonehouse with conviction. The tone is light and comic and tragic scenes fight for priority. At its core, this miniseries is most similar to the excellent The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe. Stonehouse is a solid drama about a wonderful history.
