Spy/Master plot
Set during the height of the Cold War, Spy/Master covers a week in the life of Victor Godeanu, the right-hand man and close adviser to Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. However, Godeanu is also a secret agent for the KGB and must escape Romania and Ceaușescu before his cover is broken. With only one chance to stay alive, he uses a diplomatic trip to Germany as a springboard to the United States. Aided by an undercover Stasi agent and former flame, and a rising CIA operative, Godeanu must evade the KGB and his own country's spies, fully aware that his defection is putting his family in mortal danger.

Wonderfully old-fashioned spy thriller set during the Cold War in Ceaușescu's Romania. Set in 1978, the series revolves around Victor Godeanu (Alec Secareanu - Happy Valley, Baptiste), security adviser and right-hand man to the dictator and his wife. In those days espionage meant intimidation, paranoia, hassle with rolls of film, spy gadgets and coded telephone calls. In a complex (the first episode) but especially entertaining (remaining five episodes) scenario, the constant threat is palpable; who is in control?
Various secret services pass by in the full script; Securitate, Stasi, CIA and KGB. With also a North African storyline. But even with a non-chronological narrative, Spy/Master remains an accessible historical narrative. Loosely based on the true story of Romanian spy Ion Mihai Pacepa, who fled to the West in 1978. Excellent acting and a beautiful 1970s decoration take Spy/Master to an excellent level.
