Secret Army plot

Secret Army tells the story of a Belgian escape route and the people involved. Lisa Colbert, a Belgian nurse and founder of the secret organization 'Lifeline', helps, under the code name 'Yvette', to take British pilots to safer places. Lifeline's headquarters is 'Le Candide', a Brussels restaurant owned by Albert Foiret and frequently visited by German officers. The Dutch Natalie and Monique, Albert's mistress, are also Lisa's loyal helpers. However, the operation of Lifeline is threatened by the German occupier.

In this second season, Albert opens the new Candide, a restaurant on the Grand Place in Brussels. Yvette/Lisa's death is a blow, but there are plenty of new characters and guest stars to fill that gap. As for the language, it is striking that only Natalie speaks with a French accent. The German accents are never exaggerated. Occasionally a few Dutch words can be heard, eg when Kessler addresses someone with meneer. The word Boche is used as a swear word for Germans.

The war is not presented as a battle between the good and the bad. They are layered characters with contradictions and inner conflicts. Kessler can have people tortured, deported or executed without batting an eyelid, but in his relationship with “Muff Whore” Marlene he shows his soft side. Major Brandt is for Germany, but against Nazi ideology. On the Belgian side, there is a contradiction between Lifeline's tactical approach and the fanaticism of a communist resistance group. The many facets of the Occupation have rarely been treated in such a dramatic and nuanced manner.
