Safe (2018)

A series with not too many episodes and, as far as I read the reviews, with a closed end. That got my attention. And certainly enjoyed it. Although it has not been a masterpiece.

The entire series is about the missing daughter of Tom (Dexter) and solving her boyfriend's murder. As the series progresses, more and more people come into the picture and puzzle pieces are put into place. Yet the series manages to mislead the viewer again and again. What follows is a race against time which keeps you interested in who is and who is not involved. All questions are answered and there is indeed a closed end.

What I still missed was more depth in the different characters and the further development of different situations. But so was the number of episodes. Nice to see in itself.

Addictive series. It only took me a few days.

I think fans of Broadchurch (which I certainly include myself) will appreciate this one as well. Both series have that nice oppressive everyone-knows-everyone atmosphere in such a small community. The drama aspect also gets a lot of attention in both series and not just the simpler who-did-it question. I thought each of the characters was very well developed and performed.

I just found the actual plot a bit less strong. I did not find it very credible that it turned out that the daughter had just run away, she was only actually captured after five days. You wouldn't do that to your family, would you? Especially not after your boyfriend is found dead. Okay, she was angry with her father, but after such a violent event you need him. And the fact that she was angry with her father doesn't explain why she wouldn't tell her sister, for example, and left her in uncertainty. That last plot twist, which eventually turned out to be Sophie behind the murder, also felt very cheap to me. Another typical plot purely to surprise/shock, but doesn't really fit into the story logically.

Too bad, with a slightly stronger plot, the score would have been much higher for me.
