Patria plot

Patria is set in the Spanish Basque Country over a period of more than thirty years during ETA's separatist terrorism. It tells the story through the eyes of two families separated by the violent conflict. It follows Bittori and her family, whose lives collapse the day ETA kills her husband, Txato, on his doorstep. The relationship with her intimate friend Miren, whose son belongs to an ETA commando, also comes to an end. Both families deal with grief and moral contradictions as life goes on.

Spaanse familiekroniek over de gevolgen van radicalisering binnen de Baskische terreur- en afscheidingsbeweging ETA. Patria is zorgvuldig gemaakt en ontrolt zich in een rustig tempo. Verwacht geen spannende thriller, maar een goed drama waarin met uitstekende acteurs alle familiebanden worden uitgewerkt. Tegen de achtergrond van het ETA-verzet. Klein nadeel van dit 8-delige drama is dat Patria niet chronologisch verteld wordt, maar voortdurend wisselt van tijdsperiode. Dat is goed te volgen - de special make-up artist heeft prima werk verricht - maar kijk je een aantal dagen niet dan kan het voor wie-is-wie-verwarring zorgen. Met name de eerste afleveringen. Technisch is Patria uitstekend gemaakt - met veel color local - maar mist het nodige emotionele vuurwerk. Ondanks alle ingrijpende gebeurtenissen blijft Patria, net als de hoofdpersonen, onnodig afstandelijk.
