Okkupert plot

In the near future, the Norwegian government decides, without consultation with neighboring countries, to stop all their oil and gas extraction in order to switch completely to renewable energy. Russia then, with the approval of the EU, invades the country to keep the raw materials available for the rest of the world. What should have been a nonviolent, temporary invasion soon degenerates into unrest and tension. Norwegian citizens feel their freedom is being violated and are revolting.

Recensie via mijn blog In 100 woorden | El Bromista beoordeelt - in100woorden.wordpress.com Borgen meets Die Hard. Het Noorse Occupied toont hoe Rusland zijn Noorse buren bezet en zo de vreedzame samenleving aldaar aan het wankelen brengt. Sterk acteerwerk, meeslepende personages en een gitzwarte plot zijn aan de orde van de dag. Occupied toont op enerverende wijze hoe de Noren er alles aan doen om een gewapend conflict te vermijden, zonder de Russen tegen de megalomane schenen te trappen – onbegonnen werk. Dat er in Noorwegen intussen een IS-achtige groepering is opgestaan, helpt de zaken niet vooruit. Het script lijkt bijwijlen onrealistisch, maar auteur Jo Nesbø koos heel bewust voor het meest pessimistische scenario.

Securing meets Die Hard. The Norwegian Occupied shows how Russia occupies its Norwegian neighbors and thus shakes the peaceful society there. Strong acting, compelling characters and a pitch-black plot are the order of the day. Occupied shows in an exciting way how the Norwegians do everything they can to avoid an armed conflict, without kicking the Russians against the megalomaniac shins – impossible work. The fact that an IS-like group has emerged in Norway in the meantime does not help matters. The script sometimes seems unrealistic, but author Jo Nesbø deliberately chose the most pessimistic scenario.

Er is potentie in het basisgegeven, maar hoe geloofwaardig is het nu echt? Ja, je kan naar de Krim kijken, maar dat is geen Noorwegen. Als kapstok voor diverse praktijken (zoals idd de inname van de Krim door Rusland) is het wel interessant, maar helaas trof ik hier een flink aantal behoorlijk oninteressante personages; de rebelse journalist, de vreemdgaande restauranthoudster en de meeste security types zijn nogal cliché folks die cliché dingen doen. En dat geldt ook voor de aanvallen en tegenaanvallen. In het laatste 4 delen krijgt de koppige politicus wat meer aandacht en dat pakt goed uit. Zijn personage is ook stukken interessanter dan de meesten, en Henrik Mestad speelt overtuigend. Verder is het vrouwelijke hoofd van de Noorse geheime dienst interessant, goed spel ook, en dat gaat ook op voor de vrouwelijke advocate. Verder is het allemaal vrij 'steriel' en clean vormgegeven (strakke gebouwen, weinig kleur, etc.), maar dat werkt ergens wel. Helaas wordt het echt veel te laat interessant qua plot en personages. 2,0*.

There is potential in the basic data, but how believable is it really? Yes, you can look at Crimea, but that's not Norway. As a framework for various practices (such as the capture of Crimea by Russia) it is interesting, but unfortunately I encountered quite a few quite uninteresting characters here; the rebellious journalist, the cheating restaurateur and most security types are rather cliché folks who do cliché things. And so are the attacks and counter-attacks.

In the last 4 parts, the stubborn politician gets some more attention and that works out well. His character is also a lot more interesting than most, and Henrik Mestad plays convincingly. Furthermore, the female head of the Norwegian secret service is interesting, good game too, and the same goes for the female lawyer.

Furthermore, it is all quite 'sterile' and clean designed (tight buildings, little color, etc.), but that works somehow. Unfortunately, it really gets interesting in terms of plot and characters way too late.

Deze politieke thriller haalt een deel van z’n spanning uit de bekende ingrediënten: terreurdreiging, machtsspelletjes, spionage en verraad. Een originele draai daaraan geeft het conflict rond energie. Thorium is een radioactief chemisch element dat in Noorwegen ontdekt werd en genoemd naar de god Thor. Het zou een veiliger vorm van kernenergie mogelijk maken en de CO2-uitstoot drastisch beperken. De Russische inmenging maakt deze reeks ontzettend actueel. Voor extra pigment zorgt de verhouding tussen politiek en media. Journalist Thomas Eriksen is een idealist. De premier daarentegen heeft z'n jeugdige idealen laten varen voor een meer pragmatische politiek, maar daardoor dreigt hij een stroman te worden van het Russische regime. Mensen moeten beslissen waar hun loyaliteit ligt. De mooiste rollen zijn voor Eldar Skar als de veiligheidsman Djupvik en de Litouwse Ingeborga Dapkunaite als de stijfhoofdige Russische ambassadrice Sidorova. Het regeringsgebouw is eigenlijk van Statoil in Fornebu, nabij Oslo. De constructie met vijf grote, opeengestapelde balken is hypermodern en energie-efficiënt. Een contrast daarmee vormen de besneeuwde berkenbossen. Er is een goed evenwicht tussen dialoog en actie. De snelle montage zorgt voor een hectisch sfeertje met een dosis paranoia.

This political thriller draws some of its suspense from its familiar ingredients: terror threat, power games, espionage and betrayal. An original twist is given to the conflict around energy. Thorium is a radioactive chemical element discovered in Norway and named after the god Thor. It would enable a safer form of nuclear energy and drastically reduce CO2 emissions. The Russian interference makes this series extremely topical.

The relationship between politics and media provides extra pigment. Journalist Thomas Eriksen is an idealist. The prime minister, on the other hand, has abandoned his youthful ideals for a more pragmatic policy, but in doing so risks becoming a front man for the Russian regime. People have to decide where their loyalties lie. The best roles are for Eldar Skar as the security man Djupvik and the Lithuanian Ingeborga Dapkunaite as the stiff-headed Russian ambassador Sidorova.

The government building actually belongs to Statoil in Fornebu, near Oslo. The construction with five large stacked beams is state-of-the-art and energy efficient. A contrast to this are the snow-covered birch forests. There is a good balance between dialogue and action. The quick editing creates a hectic atmosphere with a dose of paranoia.
