Matroesjka's plot

Matroesjka's is about Raymond Van Mechelen, a Belgian trafficker, who recruits young Russian and Lithuanian women in Vilnius with the help of local talent scouts. After all, Eastern European women are very popular with Western brothel visitors. Belgium is a dream transit country. The police are slow and the immigration service corrupt. Those who dare, can always rustle something up. In Cyprus, girls in local strip clubs first receive 'dance training'. Then they travel to Belgium, where they are accommodated in the nightclub of the Van Mechelen gang and then sold on to business associates in Belgium and the Netherlands. The police keep aloof. After all, 'Russian whores' are 'not a priority'. It's been a thriving business for a long time, but the latest batch of girls is causing the gang a lot of headaches. And then there's a remorseful debtor and an annoying investigative reporter. When things suddenly take a turn for the worse, tensions between the gang members run high.

Enkel een 1* omdat 0,5* toch weinig is voor een serie die zo'n geniale Daeseleire heeft. Seizoen 1 was wel geniaal.

Only a 1* because 0.5* is not enough for a series that has such a brilliant Daeseleire. Season 1 was brilliant.

Een tweede seizoen heeft het meestal wat moeilijker. Het nieuwe, het explosieve is er wat van af. Zeker ook met deze "Matroesjka's" waar de toestanden overbekend zijn en alleen nog wat kan worden verder gebreid en de aard van een groepje gangsters nog eens kan worden onderstreept : leugen, bedrog, verraad, chantage, afpersing, geweld, moord. Merkwaardig dat de "slachtoffers" van het ganse gebeuren hier zonder veel schroom ook op ingaan. Toch een sterke reeks, met afschuwelijke toestanden en uitstekende vertolkingen.

A second season usually has a bit more difficulty. The newness, the explosiveness is somewhat gone. Certainly also with these "Matroesjkas" where the situations are well-known and only a little can be expanded and the nature of a group of gangsters can be emphasized once more: lies, deceit, betrayal, blackmail, extortion, violence, murder. It is remarkable that the "victims" of the whole event also go into this without much hesitation.

Still a strong series, with horrific scenes and excellent performances.
