Maternal plot

Each of them tries to balance their increasingly demanding jobs in post-pandemic primary care with their lives as new mothers.

Maternal season 1

The six-part Maternal is a hospital drama that revolves around motherhood in relation to finding work-life balance. In a perfect mix of drama and a bit of humor as the Brits in particular can do, Maternal is very similar to ER and This is Going to Hurt. The medical team at the heart of Maternal is played by Parminder Nagra (DI Ray, and 129 episodes in ER), Lara Pulver (The Split), and Lisa McGrillis (No Offense). Maternal was created by debuting screenwriter Jacqui Honess-Martin, a name to remember.

After hundreds of hospital dramas, there is little new to add to the genre. Maternal does not do that. But Maternal is an excellent and above all fresh drama series with skilled actors in a wonderfully contemporary scenario. The men in the series do not get off well, but fortunately in a way that betrays some complexity in the characters. You can safely call Maternal feminist; an ode to women - side by side - in healthcare.

The series seems to have quickly disappeared from the radar, also in the Netherlands. Unjustly. Sadly, there won't be a second season, ITV has confirmed. And with that Maternal is treated stepmotherly. Go see this while you still can.
