Marsman plot

Marsman tells the story of Nico Marsman, who takes over the care of his autistic brother after the death of his mother. In addition, when he loses his job and his wife wants to take a break from their marriage, he finds himself more or less on his own. Nico wants to get his life back on track, but how do you get started? Fortunately, there are still certainties in life, such as his young adult daughter and the closest friends with whom Nico forms the music group De Mannen van Mars. Little by little he tries to chart his new path and find a solution for his brother.

Marsman season 1

Just as the Flemish can turn a wonderfully silly starting point (an unemployed man inherits his mother's lingerie shop) into a warm tragicomedy. Things don't go well for Nico Marsman (Jurgen Delnaet) when both the financial crisis and the humiliating affair of his wife take a toll on his state of mind. As a man who isn't used to standing up for himself, he has to regain his momentum to get things done again. For his daughter Femke (Lynn Van Royen) and also for his autistic brother Rudy (David Cantens). But actually also for his mates Mark, Peter and Ludovic from the local neighborhood cafe, with whom he has a rock band. The course of this narration can be guessed, but at times it comes out sharper than I expected from the nothing-to-hand atmosphere. For example, I really enjoy the quick dialogues when 'The Men of Mars' lavishly gulp down their Belgian Palm beers to drown their misery or rekindle past suffering. Or the surreal passages in which Mother Marsman returns as a Freudian ghost of the imagination. Much to Nico's annoyance, since Mommy's sweetheart continues to influence his life decisions even after her passing.
