Les Alsaciens - Ou les Deux Mathilde plot

In the early summer of 1870, in the Alsatian village of Alsheim. Mathilde, the only daughter of the wealthy industrialist Baron d'Empire Eugene Victor Kempf, who manufactures rail cars and cannons, has just married Count Charles de la Tour, a captain of the military fighter Africa Corps. Their happiness is short-lived because the Franco-Prussian War breaks out and the Count is killed on 'the field of honour'. Alsace is now part of the German Empire, but Mathilde stubbornly clings to her French nationality. Much to her chagrin, Strasbourg and the rest of Alsace are increasingly drawn into the German sphere of influence. Twenty years later, Mathilde's son, Louis de La Tour, who studies law in 'Little Berlin' (Strasbourg), falls in love with Frederike, the daughter of a Prussian general. Mathilde is now near despair...
