Karen Pirie plot
Karen is a young woman with a smooth talk and a sharp mind. After her promotion to Police Scotland's Historic Cases Unit, she must reopen the investigation into an unsolved murder. A young barmaid had been stabbed to death in 1995 and the three students who found the body were originally suspected. Despite the police investigation, they were never charged at the time. As she conducts her investigation, she will soon realize that the original investigation was full of errors. Those discoveries will bring her into conflict with the same officers who originally worked on the case.

An excellent detective who is very well put together.
The three episodes of one and a half hours flew by.
The often cynical humor mixed with the detective work is very nice and does not dominate the series.

Karen Pirie is based on the crime novels by Scottish author Val McDermid. McDermid, known for the stories about Dr. Tony Hill (the basis for the Wire In The Blood series), wrote six books about Karen Pirie. The producers of Line of Duty and Bodyguard turned the debut novel into a three-part series. Not much can go wrong with these recommendations, right?
Inspector Karen Pirie - excellently played by Lauren Lyle - is the no-nonsense and hands-on type. That's good because a 25-year-old cold case has to be solved. Against the grain of managers, men and media, Pirie tries to piece together the puzzle. What is immediately striking is the original approach of the otherwise conventional story in a typical Scottish setting, the photogenic St Andrews.
Pirie is young and fresh, has humor, is not flawed, has no demons from the past and is not a bitch. Just a nice colleague. And that is exactly the strength of Karen Pirie. Combined with some good plot twists, Karen Pirie rises above the average. A little too good for me, but with five McDermid books to go, this could well become a series that settles in the sub-top of British serial cinema.
