How to Get to Heaven from Belfast plot

The lives of three middle-aged friends are disrupted when they receive an email informing them of the death of their estranged fourth friend, Greta. A series of grisly events at the wake, exposing old secrets and half-buried memories, prompts the trio to investigate what really happened. Echt een stuk minder dan 'Derry Girls'. Bij vlagen is het eigen stijltje van Lisa McGee absoluut een blikvanger. De surrealistische contrasten tussen hypervrolijke kleurtjes en horror-invloeden. De wonderlijke microkosmos van sterke vrouwelijke karakters waarin mannen eigenlijk nauwelijks een plek hebben. De razendscherpe dialogen vol Ierse slang en gemene observaties. Maar verder voelt 'How To Get To Heaven From Belfast' (2026) toch vooral als de zoveelste kluchtige kloon van Twin Peaks. 'Derry Girls' wist in het format van een komedieserie lucht te vinden in de loodzware setting van de Ierse Troubles. Maar hier lijkt het opzichtige gedweep met trauma's een doel op zich. Het geschmier en over-the-top acteerwerk voelt misplaatst en vergezocht. Soms gaat het zelfs wat op de zenuwen werken.

Really a lot less than 'Derry Girls'. At times, Lisa McGee's distinctive style is an absolute eye-catcher. The surreal contrasts between hyper-cheerful colors and horror influences. The wondrous microcosm of strong female characters in which men actually have hardly any place. The razor-sharp dialogue full of Irish slang and mean observations. But otherwise, 'How To Get To Heaven From Belfast' (2026) feels mostly like yet another farcical clone of Twin Peaks. 'Derry Girls' managed to find a breath of fresh air in the format of a comedy series within the heavy setting of the Irish Troubles. But here, the blatant obsession with trauma seems to be an end in itself. The hammying and over-the-top acting feel out of place and far-fetched. Sometimes it even gets on your nerves a bit.

De nieuwe serie van Lisa McGee, van Derry Girls. Gedeeltelijk is het weer een komedie met veel van dezelfde kenmerken - centrale rol voor vrouwen, teruggrijpen op de jaren negentig, neiging naar het absurde van Ierland op zijn provinciaalst - maar gedeeltelijk is het ook een mysterie. Als McGee het daarbij had gehouden, dan had het een soort Only Murders in the Building kunnen zijn, maar ze heeft besloten ook nog een aantal serieuze dramatische noten wil kraken en er een meta-element in te stoppen door van de hoofdpersoon een schrijver van een succesvolle detectiveserie te maken. Beetje veel, beetje chaotisch. De wisselingen in toon stoorden me nog wel eens, vooral als het van heel dik aangezette surrealistische slapstick naar drama over jeugdtrauma's gaat. Of liever een poging daartoe, want dat is duidelijk niet McGees sterke punt. Je hebt soms ook acteurs in dezelfde scene van wie de een gaat voor serieus drama en de andere voor over the top slapstick. Maar goed, toch regelmatig hard gelachen en het mysterie intrigeerde op zich wel. Toch had ik liever een sister Michael spin off van Derry Girls gezien. (Gezien op Netflix)

The new series by Lisa McGee, creator of Derry Girls. Partly, it is another comedy with many of the same characteristics—a central role for women, a throwback to the nineties, a tendency towards the absurdity of Ireland at its most provincial—but partly, it is also a mystery. If McGee had left it at that, it could have been a sort of Only Murders in the Building, but she decided she also wanted to strike a few serious dramatic notes and incorporate a meta-element by making the protagonist a writer for a successful detective series. A bit much, a bit chaotic. The shifts in tone bothered me at times, especially when it goes from heavily exaggerated surreal slapstick to drama about childhood trauma. Or rather, an attempt at it, because that is clearly not McGee’s strong point. You also sometimes have actors in the same scene where one goes for serious drama and the other for over-the-top slapstick.

Anyway, I did laugh out loud regularly, and the mystery was intriguing in itself. Still, I would have preferred a Sister Michael spin-off of Derry Girls.
