After watching the latest episodes, I raised my voice. The series shows not only that it is funny, but also that it has very strong characters. The highlight for me is Kees Hulst as Hendrik Groen. He portrays the character wonderfully. Other actors also act strongly.

There is certainly another season in it, but it doesn't have to go on for 8 seasons for me.

How does one extract meaning from a life in which it can only deteriorate? 'The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen' works best when it focuses on the melancholy, poignant side of Hendrik Groen (Kees Hulst) who experiences how his masculinity is undermined and he has to fight against bureaucratic forces that take away the last bit of happiness from him. The first and last episodes in particular have a fine mixture of melancholic sadness and dryly comical gallows humor - a bit out of tune but never bitingly mean. In the middle part, the series loses some steam when the focus shifts to the omanido trips, in which the gloomy is a bit too easily converted into formulaic feel-good. And yet there is a nice build-up in how the gloomy man from the beginning (among other things through the course of the seasons) goes through new experiences, while death and illness continue to crop up in those autumnal aftermaths.
