Heer & Meester (2014-2016)

This series "discovered" when it was repeated on late Saturday night last summer.

Clearly inspired by the sixties TV series of The Saint with Roger Moore, in which Daan Schuurmans also gives an imitation of Moore a bit too clearly. The mocking looks and ironic glance plays volumes in that regard.

The series cannot be taken seriously at all if the protagonist does not do this...
If you do this as a viewer, it won't do much, but then you also miss the point.

The episodes always start with a completely crazy situation, where the main character is called by a lady from Justice, whom he helps with her investigations. For example, we see him facing a bear with only a pocket knife, or climbing a la Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible against a high skyscraper.

Also, his one-liner used every episode: "Every day is Valentine's Day!", referring to his first name "Valentine", when he seems to get another lady into bed, raises a smile.

Although the series can be called quite camp, it also exudes class and quality.
Definitely recommended for people who liked this kind of series like The Saint, Return of the Saint and The Persuaders.

I'm not sure yet whether I actually think it's a fun series or whether it's a so-called 'guilty pleasure'. Daan Schuurmans plays a kind of Roger Moore who experiences exciting comic book adventures with caricatured crooks and seductive fatal women. Pure camp of course, but fortunately the series never takes itself seriously and the clumsy part of it is therefore emphasized on all sides. The best are the well-chosen locations in and around The Hague's beau monde. They really went out of their way to find the most atmospheric locations and put on spectacle there in the form of car races, chases, explosions and shootings. It's not really deep, there is not enough room for character development and layering. Yet every episode is a feast for this light-hearted nonsense.
