De Kleine Zielen plot
Marie van Lowe lives on Alexanderstraat in The Hague and is the widow of Constant van Lowe, the former Governor General of the Dutch East Indies. She is a mother of eight children; her daughter Constance has caused a family scandal by having an affair with her husband's secretary, the envoy of the Netherlands in Rome. To save this man's reputation, Constance marries the secretary, Henri van Welcke. After living in Brussels for fifteen years, Constance decides to return to The Hague with her husband and their son Addy. The family is not happy with this choice, and is therefore afraid that Constance will be a bad influence on their children. Meanwhile, the family's prestige is deteriorating sharply: although daughter Bertha is married to a minister, son Ernst is only interested in porcelain, his brother Paul thinks all people are ugly, and sister Dorine can't seem to find a husband. Gerrit seems to be happiest as a captain. Slowly but surely, Constance manages to conquer a place in the Van Lowe family again, and discovers that everyone in the family has a great or small sadness to hide.
