Conversations with Friends plot

Frances is a 21-year-old college student. She is perceptive, cerebral and sharp. Her ex-girlfriend, now best friend, Bobbi, is confident, outspoken and compelling. Although they broke up three years ago, Frances and Bobbi are virtually inseparable, performing poetry stories together in Dublin. During one of their shows, they meet Melissa, an elderly writer, who is fascinated by the couple. Bobbi and Frances begin to spend time with Melissa and her husband, Nick, a handsome but reserved actor. While Melissa and Bobbi openly flirt, Nick and Frances embark on an intense secret affair.

After the success of the sublime Normal People, the film adaptation of Sally Rooney's debut novel Conversations With Friends (CWF) was inevitable. The 12-part drama (30 minutes per episode) unfolds like an ultra slow burner. The central theme is the four-corner relationship between student Frances and Bobbi (best friends and exes of each other), with actor Nick and his wife and author Melissa.

The problem with CWF is that the characters remain rather superficial, something the screenwriters have to blame. Frances, played excellently by Alison Oliver, falls head over heels for Nick, but mainly looks at her phone a lot and stares out the window. Cinematically not very exciting. Worried, that's the best way to describe Frances. We hardly get to know Nick (Joe Alwyn) and don't get much further than sentences like 'you make me happy' and some whispers and soft growls. CWF is about intentions that don't become clear. And feelings that are not expressed.

The literary-artistic world in which the main characters move seems rather artificial and elitist. You would expect that the main characters with professions such as writer, stand-up comedian or actor have a feeling for subtle, deeper layers in communication. In CWF, almost everything hangs in suggestion. For a 12-part series on a complex theme, that's not enough to really captivate.
