Adriaan van Dis traveled through southern Africa for two months. In this documentary series about this journey through South Africa, Namibia and Mozambique, Van Dis goes in search of parallels and contrasts with current Western European societies. Van Dis has been personally involved in southern Africa since the 1970s. He masters the African language, understands the writers and poets, closely follows political and social developments and publishes books about this region. What does southern Africa show us and what do the problems and solutions in this region tell us about our own multiculturalism in Europe? Are there parallels between the dynamics of society there and ours here when it comes to work, income, crime, health care, education and religion? In short: can we see southern Africa as a laboratory in which we can look ahead to our own future, with all the positive and negative developments?
