For four years, directors Djoeke Veeninga and Marlou van den Berge followed the writer David Van Reybrouck in the development of his new book. The Belgian writer goes in search of the last witnesses to the decolonization of Indonesia. In addition to Indonesians and Dutch, he finds underexposed fellow players. The Japanese soldiers who were sent all over the archipelago. The Nepalese Gurkha soldiers who had to put down the rebellious Indonesian freedom fighters with the British-Indian army. He looks at the interference of the British, Americans and the UN. To end with the colonies that were inspired in their own freedom struggle by the Indonesians.
