One store after another is going bankrupt, but there is one store that is experiencing unprecedented growth: the thrift store. Meanwhile there are about 1700 in the Netherlands: small and large, from Maastricht to Buitenpost. Only the non-profit recycling companies affiliated with the trade association attracted 28 million visitors in 2016. The turnover of all thrift shops in the Netherlands is about 250 million and is growing every year. But the thrift store is not only a commercial success: it is above all the social success that is so special about the thrift store. It is a place where people talk to each other again, where they help solve each other's problems, where new talents are discovered. And that largely without the government's involvement. Sympathiek programma in de geest van 'Schuldig' (2016), maar meer human interest dan over een groot maatschappelijk probleem. Maar leuke portretje van mensen uit alle lagen van de bevolking. Het geeft ook inzichten in hoe een kringloopwinkel draaiende blijft en hoe het concept zich verhoudt tot de rest van de economie. Toentertijd uitgezonden aan het einde van het jaar en dat was ook een prima moment voor zoveel hartverwarmende goedheid. Ik had overigens verwacht dat hier een vervolgseizoen op zou komen.

It also provides insights into how a thrift store continues to run and how the concept relates to the rest of the economy. It aired at the end of the year at the time and that was also a prime moment for so much heartwarming goodness. I expected a sequel season to come.
