'Evil Genius' (2018) is more like smooth exploitation television in the late evenings than in-depth investigative journalism. Now the so-called 'Pizza Bomber Heist' is also a very bizarre and macabre murder case. The humble Brian Wells was apparently on a scavenger hunt when he tried to rob a bank with a neck bomb and makeshift shotgun. He was held at gunpoint in front of the door by the police and the explosives service was too late to free him from his predicament. Wells himself seemed the most surprised of all that the timer was actually ticking to his horrific death. This docuseries almost begs for a suggestive, one-sided approach to portray Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong as the evil genius behind this horror scenario. I see no logical reason why male co-conspirators like William Rothstein and Kenneth E. Barnes don't get nearly as detailed a profile as the lady in their company. Diehl is portrayed as a fatal woman in the most classic sense: as a piercing-eyed brunette who gets the most terrible things done with her calculating seduction skills. The result is a sensationalistic caricature that encourages sexism by constantly putting her womanhood and mental illness in the foreground.
